Zooey update: eight years

I don’t know what to say, Bean. It’s a lot to pack in to so few years. Since you were four years old, the world has been upside down for the rest of us; for you and your cohort – it is what it is. I assume. We’ll find out someday. In the meantime…

  • You’re unstoppable, barely containing constant energy. Constant need to be, constant urge to go, constant drive to experience. (Especially on wheels 🛼.)
  • You’re hilarious – your words and observations, but also your warm of acceptance of humor. On the neighbor’s boy: “He funnies me out!” To the rest of us: Your timing and expressions are perfect.
  • You’re real. Your questions are very, very real. One morning we lounged in bed, and you grabbed my arm. “Were you also stolen when you were a kid?” The realness you’ve taken for granted since October 7th is tragic. But also, maybe strength. Your brave to voice out loud the questions you have.
  • You’re explosively imaginative, still, despite, and your lovely, fluffy, colorful, generative imagination still guides you and I’m grateful for that. Seeing you turn a blanket on the floor into anything, or how I love finding the surprise videos with your up-close talking on one of our phones, or walking in on some grand performance we weren’t invited to but will stay to watch nonetheless. I don’t delete those videos, Bean. Sorry. I leave them peppered across devices so we’ll step on the landmine of your hilarity at any point. Since you claim to be so ‘shy’ when it’s in front of an audience.
  • You’re curious. And it sustains you. It’s not just that we adopted a dog in the last year; it’s that you’ve taken it seriously and lovingly and want to understand and want to be a vet and want to come to every vet visit no matter how uncomfortable… You want to care for her and you want to know everything about her and understand everything.

Keep asking the questions – dog related or war related. I think you’ll be ok riding the questions out of this mess into whatever better future there is.
